East Morton was mentioned in the Doomsday Book in 1087 as a farming village.
When the Industrial Revolution overtook Morton in the late 18th Century , the establishment of the water powered textile industry attracted workers from all over Britain.
The bustling mill village supported 9 mills , surprising for a small village. . These mills manufactured predominantly Paper & Textiles.
Perhaps the most well known mill was Sunnydale Mill - a paper mill that at its time had the largest water wheel in Great Britain.
Homes to house the mill workers expanded throughout the village at this time and many of the original homes still survive today. Sadly most of the old mills are now gone. But if you explore the surrounding areas you can sport traces of them.
